Xeriscaping is landscaping and gardening that reduces or eliminates the need for supplemental water from irrigation. In 2015, we xeriscaped a front lawn in Fort Collins and we wanted to show you the progression. The plants have filled in great and look amazing!

Once again, its time to think about spring clean-ups and seasonal pruning of your landscape plants! Spring is the time when most shrubs should be pruned, while they are dormant to avoid stress to the plant.
When pruned in dormancy new buds are activated when growth starts, this allows us to downsize and shape our plant stock to prevent overcrowding and encourage proper growth and flowering. Spring pruning also gives you the chance to remove dead or damaged shoots and branches to allow maximum light to penetrate the plant. Light fosters renewed growth. Certain shrubs will have their flowering enhanced with proper pruning in Spring; and some need to be pruned after flowering for maximum re-growth and flower bud set. Trees, especially newly planted stock should be “trained” to deliver proper scaffolding (branch placement) to avoid problems in the future such as crossing or rubbing foliage, which could be unsightly. Newly planted shrubs can be stimulated to produce more branches from the base of the plant, to hasten the plants developments. Some older shrubs can be thinned at the base to produce new shoots from the roots, which will flower more profusely than the old wood. Decreasing the plants size and rejuvenating the flowering all in one step! Periodic pruning is important for different reasons for growth characteristics of shrubs and trees.
